Busy big-brother action + three-month-old unpredictability + "just-woke-up" shyness ...
When for a split-second, all three broke into their individually unique grins...

Making history in a home with true character, artfully accessorized by "still-in-the-closet-designer-mom"... letting kids be kids so that they can grow and learn and be themselves ("C" your science corner is fantastic!)... and holding their hand just long enough until it's time to let them jump.
(Sometimes it's the promise of that "jump" that composes a shot just long enough to grab a family photo... got it ;)

There are some sessions that just happen to have more energy and this was certainly one of them. Three boys, all on the run, with unique interests and very busy lives. I quickly realized that a basic "sit-together-and-smile" setup was going to be too forced for this crew and so I decided to let boys be boys and let them show me their stuff. And once I let go of any ideals I had arrived with, I was able to see who they really were together. Being busy... together.
(NB- Sessions for 2009 are entirely booked. Sorry if I missed the opportunity to meet you this year! I wish there were more days in fall.)

I felt so at home in this space. Thank you to the 2 dogs, 1 cat, big brother, and new mommy + daddy who invited me in. Did you decorate just for me? ;) The black & white contrast with hits of colour... the way you did the nursery with all the carved wooden letters hung around the top of the walls... your layers of texture, so warm... but then that's appropriate, given who you are. Baby N, be surrounded in the vibrant and colourful love that is yours to enjoy.

This was the event of the season! If you're reading this and had the distinct privilege of being in attendance, perhaps you could comment below with your praise for A & J's wedding day... I know that many of Joelle's Clients who would have loved to hop in my camera bag, just to see what A was wearing, how happy she was, how loved she is.... so, here's a little inside scoop!
She looked nothing less than marvelous - everything you'd dream a bride might be. (That's a Jenn Fenton one-of-a-kind on her wrist.)
A detail of the back of her dress:
Gotta love a Bride who's willing to hang out in a corn field before she gets married!
Always a child-photographer... here's a favorite.
Love these girls waiting:
Isn't the back of her dress fantastic!?
The happy couple:
Magic.
A & J, it was a true privilege to be a part of your wedding day. Love & happiness forever. ~Amy

Bring on the challenges that come with busy, imaginative toddlers. Let me capture the flirty naievity of a 5-year-old boy. Watch me get my feet muddy so I can find a better angle (Check out my favorite boots: Tretorn Wellies from Joelle's!) Melt my heart with a two-year-old's invitation to brunch following our session.
I cherish the time spent with this family that left me feeling "filled-up"... reminded of all that is good... that connection is there long before I set up the shot. I return home, encouraged to make sparks fly in my own family too.
One of my favorites this season...

You'd think that booking a mid-October portrait session would be ideal... leaves starting to turn and fall...comfortable weather to dress the kiddos in textured wool sweaters, maybe add a vest for a little extra layer (I love layers in photographs!) I'm sure that's what this client envisioned when she booked her session way back in August. But when the actual session date came along, temperatures snapped and we were stuck with the coldest day so far this season! Some clients would give in to the negative circumstances and inquire about post-poning, but not "M"... she figured we'd go for it anyway... bundle up the kids in blankets between setups and see what we end up with. Thanks "M" for valuing your session date enough to stick with it! Your optimism kept me toasty warm! Here's a couple for you to peek at.
(The age and stage of these brothers made things busy... Mom has her hands full at home for sure! I was glad to catch this split second moment before big-brother was up and running again.)
(Here's big-brother from a session last year just before Mom got the news that #2 was on the way! "O" you've grown into such a handsome toddler.)

On this day of thankfulness, what about your blessed life really stands out? Think about it. What makes you who your are? Makes you smile? Makes you want to work harder... come home sooner... stay up later. It's probably a "someone"... not a "something". And if it IS a someone, maybe you should tell them. Or at least say thanks.
(Thanks Andy!)
